A STORY IN LETTERS
Roy and Bert Gollan went to fight at Gallipoli and in Europe with so many other young Geelong men, a distressing number of whom did not return.
Fortunately the brothers survived.
Roy was a journalist with the ‘Geelong Advertiser’ and later the Melbourne ‘Argus’, and writes of what he saw and experienced in reports and letters home published in the ‘Advertiser’. Brother Bert, himself no slouch with the pen, does likewise.
Alongside their vivid glimpses of life at the front is a carefully curated selection of letters from some of Geelong’s other young volunteer soldiers, the whole revealing a compelling, moving, horrifying, and sometimes humorous story of the ‘war to end all wars’.
