This lavishly illustrated facsimile edition comprises a humorous story about the adventures of a 19th century London gentleman visiting the seaside resort of Margate. There he naively befriends a poor ‘vulgar boy’, only to have his trust betrayed… A quaint fable from the Victorian era, or a cautionary tale for modern-day DFLs coming ‘down from London’ to explore Thanet’s nooks and crannies (and crooks and nannies)? Some of the faces depicted in Jessop’s wonderful cartoons can still be found in the side streets around Margate Pier and the Turner Contemporary art gallery! The verse - in rhyming couplets throughout - forms part of the ever popular Ingoldsby Legends. An appendix also explains the witty references that pepper the poem, and some terms that may be unfamiliar to modern readers.
