Book description: Three Hundred and Sixty Five,

Daily Paintings of Stowe by Deborah Last

Painting the landscape every day, Deborah Last has investigated light and seasons. These works predominantly feature the beautiful Stowe Landscape Garden, affording views of Stowe School and the many temples and follies within the grounds. The series also includes locations visited such as Dublin, Connemara, Copenhagen and Mallorca.

Many people have painted and been inspired by the beautiful mansion and grounds at Stowe. These 17th Century buildings, follies and Temples have influenced artists and poets since they were first created. It is possible though that no one has painted the gardens so exhaustively as Deborah. She has lived in the grounds since 2008, having wonderful access to them early in the mornings and long after the gardens have closed in the evenings. This has enabled her to paint them in so many different lights and and explore the gradually changing seasons day by day.

Many artists have taken up the challenge to become a daily painter. But not many have managed to do it every single day for a year. Each day has been recorded and investigated, with the preponderance worked fully into paintings. Deborah’s expressive use of mark making and understanding of colour, mixed with a traditional subject matter has created a unique series of contemporary landscape paintings. To complete three-hundred and sixty-five pantings has been an amazing achievement and indeed a labour of love for this most beautiful landscape garden.
