Dublin Whisky. Roe vs. The Dublin Whisky Distillery Company, Limited.: Report of the Late Trial
Aaron Barker,George Roe & Co
In the fall of 1877 George Roe & Co. released their whisky price for the upcoming season - unchanged from the previous. The Dublin Whisky Distillery Company (DWD) followed that announcement with a price of their own which was higher than their previous season’s price. And while they justified their price increase in their announcement, they seemingly disparaged the price and practices of George Roe & Co. in such a way that a trial for libel and slander was inevitable. George Roe & Co. would not take the insult lightly. First was a London trial against the DWD agent who distributed the offending circular which was then followed with a trial in Dublin against the DWD and its directors who were responsible for the creation of the circular. At the conclusion of the Dublin trial, the transcription was abbreviated and released as a booklet of its own as a public record of George Roe & Co.‘s defense of their reputation. This new reprinting contains that work plus a brief look at the motivations behind some of the actions and an example of how the DWD would find their own bit of positivity from the experience.
