The Loves of Marie Laveau

In New Orleans, during the 19th-century period of pla age, women of color were not often granted the benefit of marriage. Marie wanted to marry for love. She met Jacques in Congo Square, fell in love and married in the church, which was her greatest joy. Following Jacques’ untimely death, she married Christophe Glapion. He was so enthralled with her that he lowered himself to a lesser social class just to have her. They had seven children together. Marie was a complex woman and held many roles. She was a hairdresser, a voodooienne, a counselor, a matchmaker and a healer. She took in orphans and treated wounded soldiers during the Civil War, but she considered her treatment of yellow fever patients her true gift. This talent was something she became renowned for and was sought out by many. Marie Laveau’s life story is one you will want to know and will not soon forget. She was a legend in her own time.
