This course was developed for all law enforcement agencies to safely extract prisoners from vehicles. There are ways to extract persons from a vehicle that allow the officer to have control, whether passive or aggressive persons are involved. Complete control is the secret. At no time should we allow a prisoner or suspect the time to become more aggressive or give them a chance to escape. Having control over a person does not mean that you have to place them in pain. The control is your positioning, and the positioning of the person involved. A major consideration is placed on your approach to the person in the vehicle. Your control over this person has to be flexible enough to adjust to an escalating situation, such as when a person changes from cooperative to uncooperative or even to violent during the extraction. You may not have time to respond to a sudden change of attitude, unless a fully controlled extraction is used. The best extraction technique is the one in which NO repositioning is necessary, and maintaining control is simply a matter of applying the appropriate pressure in response to the level of escalation. Which technique you choose to use during the extraction may vary due to the person’s positioning in his or her vehicle or the behavior of the person being extracted.
