A Graves Undertaking
J a Lesser
Londoner Benjamin Bennie Graves is down on his luck. He’s lost his wife to a swarthy Spaniard, his banking job to the boss’s dim-witted nephew, and his upper-crust father’s respect. Desperate to escape, Bennie sets out to visit his Uncle Bill, a rancher who lives near the lost-in-time village of Vaca Seca in far northern New Mexico. Uncle Bill was cast out by the Graves family long ago for his love of cowboys and the American West, and he convinces Bennie to reopen the Dos Abuelas cafe, named for two cantankerous old sisters, Esperanza and Maria, who don’t like any outsiders, especially a gringo, invading their world.
