Give Your Child A Healthy And Enjoyable Reading Experience ‘BINA AND THE BEANPOLE’ Working For Unity In The Community - Vol. 2 Written and Illustrated by Ife-Gail F. Young ***ATTN: VOL. 2 CONTAINS A LITTLE VIOLENCE THAT PIVOTS THE PLOT FORWARD*** What Is This Afrocentric Series About? Originally adapted from a play, written by the author, the series has maintained the same concept with ‘family and community’ being the focal point. Bina And The Beanpole consists of volumes of chapter books, each containing several black and white illustrations. The Series has a purpose to inform, empower, heal, and inspire greatness in African American youth. It is a ‘Coming of Age’ series that travels into a child’s world as it promotes Unity, African/African-American History, Literacy, Spirituality, Healthy Behaviors and Values, Promotes Family and Community, Healthy Self-Esteem, Highlights Kwanzaa Principles, Solutions, and leaves the reader with a deeper sense of self. Character narrated; Abena ‘Bina’ Sekou is a 12 year old stubborn, sassy, tough little tomboy that never backs down from anyone. She is also bright and self-assured and possesses an unusual gift for her age. Other characters will be given a voice in the series as well. In Vol. 2: Uncle Tshombe gives a presentation on ancient black history and gives real talk to the community. Bina learns a painful lesson when she does not walk away from a fight soon enough. Also, Bina and Deonte complete the newsletter and raise money through an entrepreneurial venture. We also learn the identity of the man that chased Bina and Deonte in Volume 1. He will become valuable to the community in a strange kind of way. Then gang violence sends the Sekou family and community seeking solutions. Bina takes out revenge on others and learns a good lesson. Aunt Zola joins in helping to empower the community. She also reveals to Bina the real reason she moved with their family instead of leaving with Uncle Tshombe. Hint: Wah Wah! Finally, Saida reveals a talent that no one could have ever imagined and she begins to see the world in a different way. Happy ending? You’ll have to read Volume 2. But in Volume 2 we will witness the beginning of a new beginning. The gradual relationship that evolves between Bina and Aunt Zola from volume to volume is powerful as disappointments, lessons and triumphs helps shape Bina into a well-disciplined young person with great purpose. Be sure to read every volume so you won’t miss a thing! (Recommended for ages 12 and up. Enjoyable reading for the entire family)
