Jana Wilson and her boyfriend Rey have drifted apart. When he and their yacht, the Miss Jana, disappear, the police say he took off to get away from her. "He'll show up one day," they said.

Because he never takes the boat out alone, Jana is certain that someone hijacked the Miss Jana and she believes Rey is in grave danger-if not dead. Frustrated with the police response, Jana reaches out to Alexander Christian, a part-time private detective and full-time beachcomber, who helped her out of a previous jam.

With nothing more than an empty boat slip to go on, Alexander investigates the disappearance of the Miss Jana and discovers that she is headed for the Caribbean. When South America becomes a likely destination, he recruits the one person he knows who speaks Spanish-his ex-girlfriend-who wants nothing to do with him.
