Basic starting techniques are vitally important in sprint races. When one is a successful runner, his success is because of his basic foot position on the starting blocks. The heel will be off the back block, with lots of pressure going through the back foot as a foundational position. Often runners STEP BACK and LOOK BACK in order to secure that they are in proper position to finish the race with winning status. Winning a race depends on how an athlete orchestrates his step backward and his looking back at this foundational position as preparation for going forward. Some coaches tell their runners to get familiar, even comfortable with the set, start position because if they are only thinking about the sound of the starting gun shot and focusing on the lead hand or leg - then their feet will not be positioned properly to apply force to the blocks in order to have the agility and speed to run the course and finish the race a winner. The foundation affects the smooth execution of the whole race.Parallel the technique of this natural race with that of the spiritual race we run in Christ. The foundation is of vital importance. To finish the Christian race, we too must take the time to STEP BACK and LOOK BACK as the foundation for moving forward. The only way we can grow and go forward is continuing to reflect on Biblical prototypes and foundation given by God to dictate a God-inspired future. Often believers have great aspirations and plan to run full throttle ahead, but we forget to step back, look back and see the value of foundational patterns for our lives and the life of the Lord’s church. There are so many Biblical patterns that serve as the foundation we must continue to build on today; we must not neglect to step back and look at them. This text mentions only a few.
