How well do you know someone? Can you live with a murderer and not know it? In older age, Kate reads a newspaper report about a skeleton which has been found in a disused well and identified as Dudley Mallow, her husband’s brother. She suspects her husband of murdering him fifty years ago.

All the people she shared her life with are dead. However, she must find out the truth, an impossible task surely, but the cruelty of betrayal is driving her forward. Her mind drifts back over her life looking for clues. The answer must be there somewhere.

Set in the Welsh mining valleys of the early 20th century whose brutal politics and social unrest exacerbate the flaws in relationships and communities Kate is left alone in the world at the age of eight and has to grow strong to survive the poverty and cruelty of life around her. Her beauty attracts men but love is something she is afraid of and rejects until a chance meeting with Tom, a handsome young miner of questionable reputation who falls in love with her. And so, Tom comes into her life but so does his brother, Dudley.
