A valedictory collection of poems of autumn, of beauty, of regret and the dying associated with this magnificent season.
The first part sets the scene generally. The second part, Bleak Elegies, consists of poetry written during the three weeks either side of the winter solstice, and reflects the seasonal affective disorder which affects the author particularly badly during that time. In the third part, Odes Autumnal, the poems are more philosophical and reflective of autumn’s gifts.
Unlike the magnificent and inspirational odes of Keats, which are filled with the naive innocence of a young man, this collection is written from the perspective of someone who has lived long amid the agonies of a world in torment.
