On a visit to Cuba in 1997 to record the Cuban Master Sessions series of CDs for Ninja Tune, Rupert Mould of Up Bustle and Out came across a man who knew the original old man from Hemmingway’s The Old Man and the Sea . Rupert set out to meet him, to hear his tales, to learn from him. This book is the result of a meeting between the two in which Mould retells the story from the mouth of the old fisherman. Far from the machismo and power of the original story, here we find someone who has turned to philosophy and questioning after realizing that he and fish were equal - only trickery set man apart from beast. We meet a man for whom the sea is a far better companion than the rest of humanity. It is somewhat humbling to be introduced to so profound a man through what can only be described as a happy accident - two men discussing Hemmingway over a cigar in a recording studio in Havana.
