Seemingly insulated from the antiwar protests, racial strife, and social upheaval that grips much of the rest of the country, life, and the cotton harvest, goes on in the small west Texas town of Preston in the fall of 1969.
For Amy Evans, senior year at Preston High School is not turning out like she planned. Her boyfriend Bobby joined the Army after graduation in May and is home on leave, just in time to escort her onto the football field as homecoming queen. Before leaving for Viet Nam, Bobby asks his best friend Kevin, who has just returned from the war, to look after Amy while he’s gone.
Kevin and Amy are soon seen around town, cruising the drag, at the movies, eating cheeseburgers at the Hi-Way Cafe, looking all too cozy to her best friend Sandra. Rumors spread that Kevin is moving in on Bobby’s girl while he’s in Viet Nam, coming to a head when a fight breaks out at Sandra’s New Year’s party. Her relationship with Kevin strained, and with Bobby nine thousand miles away, Amy faces the most difficult decision of her life.
