Inspired by the exhibition, Slavery in New York, this issue contextualizes slavery from historical and contemporary perspectives in essays by Ira Berlin, Leslie Harris, James Oliver Horton, Johanna Kardux, Steven Mintz, Sherrill D. Wilson, Eric K. Washington, Richard McDermott, Keith F. Davis, and Lowery Stokes Sims. The history makers interview is with Howard Dodson, director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library; the teacher feature considers black writers of the founding era.
