It is the end of the Sassanian Empire, during the onslaught of Muslim invasions into Persia. When King Yazdgird III is found dead in a flourmill, the helpless miller, together with his wife and daughter, must reenact their encounter with the king to prove their innocence
or else face a horrible death.
