Grand Mound

The largest ancient burial mound in Minnesota and the upper Midwest - in a natural setting of mystery and beauty. Grand Mound now rests silently in a dense grove of trees and ferns where woodland people began to mound earth over their dead 2,500 years ago. Ancestors of Native Americans gathered annually at this special place on the Rainy River near present-day International Falls to fish for the giant sturgeon, an important source of food. Using new information from archaeological digs, archaeologist Mike Budak provides dramatic glimpses of life as it might have been, bringing alive the succession of cultures in Minnesota through thousands of years.
