Gertrude Stein’s America

Although born in the United States, Gertrude Stein lived in France for most of her life, and died there in 1946. However, she was intensely pro-American and her influence on contemporary American culture was considerable. She never lost her plain American accent nor her ardour for the United States. This is a collection of her perceptive observations on her native land; it comprises excerpts from her essays, novels, plays, poems, lectures and interviews, showing Stein’s essentially romantic view of her birthplace.
