Landscape and Settlement in Britain, AD 400-1066

This book outlines some of the developments which took place in Britain between the end of the Roman period and the Norman Conquest. The information contained in the papers has been drawn from both archaeological and documentary sources, and whilst the material has a national implication some of the studies have been carried out on a detailed regional basis. Unifying themes include the effects upon settlement and the landscape of the arrival of new communities, not only generally in the transition from the Roman to early medieval period but continuously throughout the latter in peripheral regions; and the influence of institutions, whether secular lordship and estate-building or the very important contribution of the Church.
