The Ramones

Dick Porter

The Ramones were a band like no other in the history of rock'n'roll. They wore a uniform of long hair, tight ripped jeans and leather biker jackets, but ‘Da Brudders’ from NYC were not real siblings but four individuals: Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, Tommy and, later, Marky. Formed in 1974, the band went on to fashion a blistering three-chord style from their combined love of 1960s pop music, proto-punk bands like the Stooges, trash culture and horror movies. And through their residency at Manhattan’s notorious CBGB’s club, the band gave rise to the style known as punk rock. Straddling three decades, their career left its mark on every significant punk band, from the Sex Pistols to Nirvana and Green Day. Gabba Gabba Hey! tells the story of the Ramones at the thrilling breakneck pace of the band’s own ‘blitzkrieg bop’. It covers CBGB’s and the New York punk scene, including the classic early Ramones albums and the cult movie ‘Rock'n'Roll High School. It tells of the too-much-too-soon lifestyles, the turbulent recording sessions with eccentric genius Phil Spector, and Johnny’s near-fatal beating, along with the climactic 1996 Lollapalooza tour, Dee Dee’s rebirth as a horror author haunted by the ghosts of dead punk legends, and Joey’s own untimely death in 2001. This is the story of the Ramones - a band as trashy as last week’s garbage and as all-American as the eagle on their logo.
