This book recommends strategies to efficiently sustain and operate the United Kingdom’s submarine industrial base. The complexity and uniqueness of a nuclear submarine requires special skills, facilities, and oversight not supported by other shipbuilding programmes. There is particular concern about the future vitality of the United Kingdom’s submarine industrial base. This report looks at what actions should be taken to maintain the country’s nuclear submarine design capabilities and how nuclear submarine production should be scheduled for efficient use of the industrial base.
