As the effects of a cultural upheaval were felt in 1920’s America, the story of the Scopes Monkey Trial pitted religion against science. During the summer of 1925, John Scopes, a high school teacher, was charged with illegally teaching the theory of evolution. As two famous lawyers–Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan–went against each other, the fate of the defendant paled in comparison to the feelings the trial uncovered.
