As corporate managers look toward the 1990s there is general consensus that the corporate environment will become one of continual change. But business is not merely a passive player to be acted upon by the forces swirling around it; business today is in position of power to influence the directions in which the future will take people. This volume offers some insights into the issues that may affect management in the 1990s, and suggests a philosophy for successfully dealing with these issues. The contributors comprise a mix of corporate leaders and members of the academic community. Among the key forces considered likely to have a significant impact on managers and their organizations are: Europe in 1992 when most internal barriers to free trade will be removed and when the European Economic Community will be fully integrated; the problem of water supply and quality as civilization faces the probability that pure water in most parts of the United States and other parts of the developed world will become progressively more contaminated; solid waste management; and the greenhouse-effect and conservation of natural resources. Forces such as education and training and leadership style are also addressed. The book also considers the commitment to quality by American business - not as a current management fad but as a fundamental change in attitude driven by the basic motivations of business: competitiveness and the bottom line. Appendices to the volume contain discussions of specific case histories of the NEC Corporation and Nyack Hospital in New York The appendices also include a number of congressional addresses.
