This collection of articles presents many aspects of the pietas humanistica - a very special mixture of Christian and classical tradition. The book offers a synthesis of Latin humanistic religious poetry in Poland from the 15th to the 18th century, taking into account its broad European context. The authors discuss literary genres, especially prayer and its function, the structure of the speaking subject, biblical motifs and their interpretation or re-reading, the usage of classical tradition, as well as lexical and phraseological aspects (Christian verses vs. pagan sources), an rhetorical structure of poems. An important part of the book consists of articles focused on theological aspects of poetry, i.e. studies in the history of ideas as well as discussing poetry in the context of fundamental theological controversies and medieval tradition.
