This study deals with the reception of antiquity in the early 19th century and the problematic relationship of tradition and progress as experienced by the contemporaries. While tracing the discrepancy of classical and modern aesthetics in its interaction with this complex, transitory period the author aims to present the Oedipus-myth in its metaphysical, existential, psychological, social-historical and social-psychological adaptations and transformations.
