Prayerful Responsibility: Prayer and Social Responsibility in the Religious Thought of Douglas Steere

This study examines the problem of relating prayer and social responsibility through an analysis and critical evaluation of the religious thought of Douglas Steere, a leading Quaker thinker and a key figure in 20th-century spirituality. The author aims to clarify Steere’s solution to the dilemma and establishes a dialogue between a classical Quaker and a liturgical approach to the problem as a foundation for further study in the academy and in the churches.
