In this book - the second volume of his study of South Africa - Steven Debroey pays attention to race relations, without losing sight of the historical context. On the basis of concrete data, the author sketches and analyzes the apartheid system, which was institutionalized after the political take-over of the Afrikaner Nationalists in 1948, and has been enforced by violence. He describes the coming into existence of the African National Congress (ANC), the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) and other resistance movements. The author examines the circumstances in which the ANC responded to violence with violence after nearly half a century of fighting in vain for the rights of the oppressed by peaceful means. During 14 study tours, the author travelled all over South Africa and witnessed the fatal consequences of an ideology that is denounced throughout the world. In order to establish the reliability of his data, he had his manuscript checked by a South African historian.
