Antoine Meillet (1866-1936) is one of the most important linguists of all time. A French linguist and Indo-Europeanist, he was the author of over two dozen books and reference works that are still widely consulted, including
The Comparative Method in Historical Linguistics
and
General Characteristics of the Germanic Languages . Meillet was a student of Ferdinand de Saussure, intellectual father of structuralism, at the Sorbonne. He spent most of his career at the College of France, teaching a generation of students who would be influential in their own right.
