Paulist Father Isaac Hecker: An American Saint
Boniface Hanley
Isaac Hecker was New York born priest and Paulist founder whose cause for sainthood has been introduced to Rome. Fr. Hecker was unique among American priests of his time in that he believed passionately that American democratic ideals and respect for individual freedom provided a perfect soil for the growth of Roman Catholicism. A man of singular spiritual and intellectual gifts, he was a proponent of a vision of the Catholic Church that would later see its realization in the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. This book contains a biographical sketch of Fr. Hecker’s life, commentary on the cause of Father Hecker by Cardinal Edward Egan of New York, a description of the canonization process by a Paulist father, and the canonization prayer for Father Hecker. It also contains photographs and images from the Paulist archives that illustrate the life and times of this remarkable American priest.
