Rumer Godden is best-known for her novels Black Narcissus and A Greengage Summer , and for her children’s books The Doll’s House and Impunity Jane . This study, organized chronologically, focuses on themes of the conflict between the needs of children and adults, and how this relates to Godden’s own life. The author points out formal and thematic connections in Godden’s work over the six decades in which she has been writing.
