Originally published in 1870, the contents of this book were compiled from a series of articles published in a religious periodical, about twenty years since, with the title, ‘Thomas Scattergood, and his Times.’ They comprise brief biographies of Friends, who lived in this country in the last and early part of the present century, who became conspicuous for their devotion to the cause of Truth. A number of incidents are given that had not been printed before. The biographical sketches include the following persons: David Ferris, William Hunt, Samuel Emlen, John Churchman, Rebecca Jones, Daniel Offley, William Savery, George Dillwyn, Arthur Howell, William Jackson, Peter Yarnall, Anthony Benezet, Jacob Lindley, Eli Yarnall, Sarah Harrison, John Parker, Nicholas Waln, and Moses Brown. The sketches are interspersed with numerous anecdotes, and contains valuable records of religious experience, exemplifying the doctrines and testimonies of the Society of Friends, and their accordance with the Holy Scriptures. The original index to full-names, places and subjects completes this work.
