This book documents the journey of seven generations of the Hewitt family from the 1600s in colonial Maryland to the early twentieth century in Ohio. It follows one line, including siblings, as they headed west just prior to the Revolutionary War and settled for a generation in western Pennsylvania. You will meet Jacob Hewitt, an indentured servant who made good by marrying into the Maryland gentry. His land legacy in western Pennsylvania allowed his sons Robert, Richard and Ephraim to move west into Ohio and Tennessee where one became a frontier judge and the others made their living as farmers, innkeepers and tradesmen. One son fought in the Revolutionary War, and the next generation served in the War of 1812. Hewitt women nursed children through fevers and epidemics, endured loneliness and above all, faced death as part of life. Those who married into the Hewitt family include the Cochran, Davis, Durham, Edwards, Fisher, Gaither, Gulick, Hall, Hull, Jacks, Kennedy, Kenny, Kyle, Morrison, Piersol, Schmidt, Terhune, Williamson and Wood families. Additional lines are the Ackerman, Bell, Bishop, Chandler, DeHart, Elder, Gaither, Hartshorn, Pierpont, Selover, Shute, Smithson, Sturm, Thompson, Warfield and Wyckoff families. Numerous vintage photographs, maps and a fullname index enhance the text. 2005, 6x9, paper
