Be it remembered, that on the twelfth day of February, in the fifty-fifth year of the Independence of the United States of America, Nathan Hoskins and J. Shedd, of the said District, have deposited in this office, the title of a book, the right whereof they claim as proprietors, in the words following, to wit: "A History of the State of Vermont, from its discovery and settlement, to the close of the year 1830. By Nathan Hoskins.-'Illi, libertate adepta, floruerunt.'" In conformity to the act of the Congress of the United States, entitled "an act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times herein mentioned."

This history includes geography, flora and fauna, discovery, Indian tribes, surrender of Canada to Great Britain, civil policy from 1760 to 1775, first settlement, controversy and claims of New Hampshire and New York and Massachusetts, establishment of state boundaries, the floods of 1811 and 1830, the War of 1812, and the unusually cold summer of 1816. It also gives an overview of counties, towns, the courts, revenue and expenses of the government, population tables, banks, militia, colleges, and religion. An index to names completes this work.
