Lanarkshire was once part of Scotland’s industrial heartland but, away from the grime and smoke, there was the more picturesque and rural Clyde Valley. Before car ownership became a routine necessity rather than a luxury, the citizens of Lanarkshire relied heavily on public transport. Lanarkshire Buses covers the halcyon days (1950s-1970s) of public transport and its providers, both large and small. While Central SMT may hae been state-owned omnibus overlords, famous independent operators such as Baxter’s, Hutchison’s, Irvine’s and Stoke’s all played their part. Also included are companies who provided vital transport for miners, factory workers and schoolchildren.
