Chambered cairns are amongst the earliest architectural achievements of the peoples of Scotland. They are the principal surviving evidence of the earliest agricultural communities, and include some of the finest examples of such monuments in Scotland. In particular, the Central Highlands saw two traditions of tomb-building and is thus a critical area in the elucidation of the neolithic period in Scotland. In this volume the burial monuments of the early inhabitants of Northern Scotland are examined and the surviving remains are described, offering a reference source for the neolithic period in this area. of Scotland. The book brings together the evidence from all the surviving monuments in Ross and Cromarty and Invernessshire. The chapters include plans and descriptions. A final chapter draws together all the information gathered over two decades of field survey to provide an inventory that should make this book an important landmark in the study of chambered cairns in both Scotland and Europe.
