This volume is part of the Collected Works of James Hogg series. After 100 years of relative obscurity, James Hogg (1770-1835) is now considered to be one of Scotland’s major writers. This collection of his works results from 15 years of academic research into Hogg’s first manuscripts, proofs and early editions. Each volume includes a full introduction, explanatory notes and commentary. This volume in the series presents Tales of the Wars of Montrose . The five tales centre on the brilliant campaigns of the first Marquis of Montrose and the period of turbulence and anarchy surrounding them. Love, familial conflict, military victory and wily politics run through the stories, revealing the different impacts of the civil war on 17th-century society. The original edition departed substantially from Hogg’s wishes; not only was it bowdlerized by a genteel editorial team who smoothe dover Hog’s racy style, but the editon included other work not designed as part of the collection. This edition of the Tales uncovers Hogg’s original colourful text and demonstrates the essential unity of the work.
