Ranching and Enterprise in Eastern Botswana: A Case Study of Black and White Farmers

This text studies a key section of the new enterprising population in Botswana - the ranchers. It describes their changing life styles, their construction of personal and social space and the way they have adapted to state-initiated political and economic change. In a series of case-studies, it shows how ranching has grown from a white settler preserve to include Botswana and alien African farmers, as well as Afrikaner and English. The relationship between ranching and communal land tenure, and the affect of Botswana’s Tribal Land Grazing Policy is analyzed in detail, while the careers of non-elites, as well as district and national elites, the practice of bordermanship, labour relations and management of multiple enterprise are also covered.
