Jyotirmayee Mohapatra: Advocate for India’s Young Women
Adam Woog
Growing up in her village in India, Jyotirmayee Mohapatra witnessed the serious problems that children, especially girls, face there. Inequality, lack of education, poor living conditions, and a lack of rights is what stirred Jyotirmayee to stand up and make a difference. As a teen, she organized the Meena Club to draw attention to and attack these problems. India now boasts over 300 Meena Clubs, and in 2004 Jyoti received the prestigious Youth Action Network award. There is no way your readers won’t be stirred to find their own causes after reading her thrilling and inspiring story.
