Book Review

ABC Disability
by Sarah Rose, Alley Pascoe, Beck Feiner (illus.)

by Dani Solomon, Jul 2024

ABC Disability is not just an A-to-Z list of disabilities, it’s a book designed to start conversations. While it does include a pretty good number of named disabilities, as well as blanket terms for multiple others, it also talks about things like ‘R for Respect’: respecting that different people might not like loud noises for example. Or ‘T is for Talk’: some people may speak very slowly or may use tools to talk; when you talk to someone with these kinds of disabilities, just be yourself, and listen. These may all seem like obvious things to adults, but to kids – particularly kids who’ve not met anyone with disabilities before – these are all things that need to be learnt.

This book is a marvellous tool for caregivers and a great jumping off point for a conversation that should never end: what can we do to help make sure people with disabilities live lives just as fulfilling as anyone else’s? For ages 3+.
