Puppy Summer

For Jon and Vestri, spending the summer at their grandparents' farm is a great adventure in itself. And when Grandpa tells them they may choose one of the three puppies at the little house nearby, the children are ecstatic. The puppies prove so loveable that even Grandma can't resist taking home all three. But Smith, Brown, and Jones have to be cared for, trained, and fed. And when Jon and Vestri forget to do their share of the tasks, the matter must be settled in the Corncrib Court. Though this story of a wonderful 'puppy summer' - climaxed by a fishing trip with a surprising conclusion - runs the deep sympathy for animals so characteristic of Meindert DeJong's work. The pictures by Anita Lobel are full of warmth and humour and capture the mood of the story to perfection.
