A Stitch in Time: Guidelines for the Care of Textiles

Of the varied contents of a parish church, the textiles can be the most demanding in terms of upkeep and long-term preservation. A Stitch in Time aims to provide guidelines that should encourage good practice in dealing with the upkeep and preservation of church furnishings, textiles and vestments. The booklet provides guidance on basic housekeeping, suggests practical aids towards good storage and indicates when outside professional help might be needed. Topics covered include: guidelines for the care of textiles; causes of deterioration and their remedies; storage and display; and cleaning and repair. This booklet also provides useful contact addresses for key organizations such as Diocesan Advisory Committees and the National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies.
