Jesse Langley’s first ten years of life, spent on a ranch in rural Arizona, forged some strong personal and societal values. And while those values are challenged during his years as an outsider at high school in the big city of Tucson, it is during his tour in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine that he really finds them tested and ultimately discovers their true importance. It is a story of war seen through the eyes of a young man who enlisted because he thought it was his duty, and for whom the concept of duty becomes ever less political and ever more personal. Woven throughout is a love affair, started in high school and revisited sporadically, which offers its own unique set of challenges to those values.
