Life Is Not Complicated, You Are: (Novel Study Guide)

The author of Life is Not Complicated, You Are , Mr. Carlos Wallace teaches life lessons through his autobiographical narrative. The intent of this novel study is to provide lessons and suggestions for Secondary English educators as an opportunity to discuss difficult coming of age topics with our students. As educators, we are aware that there are many ways to approach a novel study. This novel study guide approaches the content through a social justice lens. The lesson plans are designed for a 4 to 6 week novel study. The novel study addresses the narrative as a reflection of a wealth of knowledge, an opportunity to share experiences, and shared privileges from the perspective of the author. Each chapter is titled with a quote reflective of the chapter’s content. These quotes are duplicated in the study guide and intended for student reflective purposes. Some chapters have been grouped together as the themes within the chapters are closely related. The suggested page grouping should be ideally read during class and then remaining sections for homework. Students are encouraged to read in class as much as possible. Reading in class promotes a connectedness with the text. Most of the assignments for Life is Not Complicated, You Are have been constructed with small groups in mind. Ideal groups should consist of 3 to 4 students. This novel is intended to be discussed as the subject matter commands small and large group discussions. There are links provided where students can hear Mr. Wallace not only tell a little about himself as one is autobiographical, but also propel the narrative. Provided links should be previewed and discretion is advised contingent upon the intended audience. The suggested activities are conversation initiators. The intended use of these activities should facilitate student interaction. Students should journal or write reflections as they navigate through the prescribed readings. This novel has the propensity to facilitate enlightening classroom conversation and broaden the scope and knowledge of issues as they relate to social justice. Welcome to my world. Take what you need. - Carlos Wallace Sincerely, Vanessa Necolettos Ed.S.
