Reinforced Concrete Basics has been written for students and practising structural engineers. It provides an up-to-date, practical treatment of reinforced concrete design in accordance with the current, amended edition of the Australian Concrete Structures Standard AS 3600, and takes account of latest industry developments, including the use of high-strength concrete and higher-strength reinforcing steel. The concepts of analysis and design are presented from a fundamental viewpoint so that the text will be of value to readers using other codes and standards. The text takes readers to the stage where they can undertake, with confidence, the design of structural elements such as beams, slabs, columns and walls and simple concrete structures such as building frames and continuous girders. This edition of Reinforced Concrete Basics was prepared following the appearance, in 2018, of the 5th edition of the Australian concrete structures standard, AS 3600-20018, and its Amendment 2 in 2020. The new edition of our book addresses changes in the strength reduction factors and provides an informative introduction to the new design rules for calculation of crack widths and for shear and torsion, which are based on the modified compression field theory. We have also introduced the concept of stress fields and their relationship to strut-and-tie modelling.
