This book lays out all the basic functions in operating a business and how to deal with them. It also exposes things to think about and actions to take before starting a business. For existing business operators, it is a re-visiting of the fundamentals ? a spur to review established habits and to act strategically. Ongoing functions such as insurance, making and receiving payments, leasing premises, IT systems, bookkeeping, and working capital, are outlined to expose decisions and actions needed. Attention is given to managing markets, choosing customers, products and services to offer, and what inventory to carry. Standard business language and information is explained in terms of what is meant and how its used. References to actual practices, taxes, laws, and regulations are in an Australian context. This book could have been titled ?Running a Business 101?. Author Bio: Became a CPA in 1970 and focused on public accounting, with spells as a partner and as a sole practitioner. There were forays into larger corporate work and the last eleven years of full-on work were spent designing, and implementing, major software systems for government agencies. Departures from accounting include being CEO of a group of small businesses involved in building supplies, manufacture, transport, and giftware. Also, owning and operating a country store, a guesthouse, and a seven-day-a-week cafe. There are not many types of businesses not helped with purchasing, starting up, running, expanding, closing, or selling. Also, not many ownership types or motivations for being in business, not met up with. The result is an intimate familiarity with the minutia of business operations and a clear understanding that nothing is mysterious or magical ? only logical and transparent.
