Rona Stole My Grades - A Senior Student’s Story - is a self-help book disguised as a fictional story. The book follows Carter through a self-exploratory chat with a virus (coronavirus). Carter is a final year student, annoyed and affected by the impact ‘Rona’ has had on his studies, i.e. the closure of schools, the change to assessments, and predominantly, his confidence level.

Through his chat with the virus, Carter works through a range of teenage challenges including negative self-talk, low self-esteem, poor diet, and sleep patterns, The Teenage Broken Heart Process, and the attraction to just giving up when things get hard. A highly humorous tale highlighting many teenage woes, Carter learns that his thoughts are having a bigger impact on his grades then perhaps Rona has or will have. This cleverly constructed story will evolve from Carter being the victim of change to a hero armed with multiple coping and life strategies. Despite the numerous interruptions throughout the chat, Carter will learn that all is not lost and that he could emerge from this unpredictable mess a much stronger and capable student; a higher version of himself. He jokingly calls this version Cosmic Carter!

The short book is written in a fictional and humorous style, yet delivers powerful messages about how a student may be thinking during this stressful year, and how they may otherwise look at the disruption. It is a performance-enhancing tool for final year students disguised as a light read. Slowly but surely, the student can put into perspective what their grades mean and recalibrate the anxiety triggered by the recent loss of control. Whether it be ATAR’s, UAI’s, SAT’s, ACT’s, OSSD’s, GCSE’s, IELTS’s, or CBSE’s, this book is designed to help Year 12 / Senior Year Students solve their own challenges and power towards success. It is a must-have for any senior year student wanting to find the highest version of themselves.

This short book (82 pages) is dedicated to all senior year students; and parents, caregivers, and teachers of senior year students; concerned about what this unusual school year will mean for them. It is designed to be read in no more than a few hours, however, its impact is intended to last a lifetime. The messages contained within the story draw on the author’s own educational experience as well as her twenty years of training, coaching, and helping people find simple solutions to complex problems.

If I can help just one student face this year with greater levels of confidence and resilience, then all the very late nights perfecting this short book will be more than worth it. And if reading this book enhances a few grade scores along the way, well wouldn’t that be an added thrill. This is the sort of book I wish someone had given me when I was 17. - Chandra Clements (author)
