Lost in the Australian bush after being chased by a pack of dogs, Banjo, the stumpy-tail cattle dog has to find a way to survive alone. Or is she alone? Will the bushland animals help her and can her mysterious companion, the Long-Ago dog, give her the courage to survive? Based on an actual incident when this dynamic dog disappeared for 10 days in the country of the Jinibara people of south east Queensland. A small Australian rural community wondered how this much loved and pampered pooch survived in the bush alone, waiting patiently for her beloved humans to find her. Only a canine would have this much patience and faith. Her owner cut short his overseas travelling to return to help look for her, such was this special little dog’s hold on her human family. Then the miracle. When all hope of finding her was gone, her humans found her on their last day of their search. Seemingly none the worse for wear and sheltering under an old abandoned caravan, there she was. A true Hollywood ending! A trip to the vet confirmed she was okay albeit a few pounds lighter. Banjo’s story is told with the intention of inspiring young readers to investigate further the unique flora and fauna of the Australian bushland. In addition, her story teaches the importance of showing respect and acknowledgement to the original inhabitants, both the animals and the people, who continue to be the custodians of this incredible landscape and its story.
