Born in Liverpool Ann Clark resorts to theft to save her father's life but finds herself on the other side of the world at the Parramatta Gaol. Private Alexander 'Sandy' McKenzie from the Scottish Highlands is a career soldier who finds himself in Sydney with his Commanding Officer and now Colonial Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Thinking that love had passed him by he falls for the pregnant convict girl who catches his eye in the grounds of Parramatta Gaol.

And so begins a saga that takes the reader to Sydney, Newcastle and Launceston from 1810 until 1839 as the story of Ann and her children comes to life. This is a story of love, loss and courage during the forming of a Nation.
