When I visited south west Western Australia and helped our son harvest truffles near the town of Manjimup, I witnessed the working relationship between dogs and their handlers.

From new puppies arriving and getting first lessons in seeking this gourmet fungus, to an elderly dog dying after faithfully serving her owner for over a decade ... it was heart warming and inspirational to witness.

So I decided to write this book.

What started out as a picture book about a child and his pet, quickly evolved into an educational story.

Truffles are a little-known crop with an intriguing biology. In 'Hunting Black Gold' I have tried to increase understanding of truffles, the oak trees they grow beneath and their place in nature.
