The book Earth and Sky came from a series of life events where Chelsea Leaf and her daughter Suriya witnessed the passing of toads, birds and all kinds of insects in their environment. First a peculiar and uncelebrated old cane toad that was squashed on the path of their morning walk. Each day they acknowledged its physical form being broken down by many insects, until one day it was again one with the earth and its elements. And its’ spirit? Chelsea Leaf explained to her daughter, It has gone back to the sky… The body is just the house for the eternal energy of the spirit that moves from one life to another. A perplexing scene for an 18 month old, yet as time has gone by they have found more creatures in which to pay respect to, honouring each life and holding ceremonies by preparing their earth beds, collecting burial flowers and watching nature flourish around them.
